Build Your Own Website

This blog was created to help internet newbies get started. It may be understating the obvious to say that to make money online you have to have a website or blog online. To do a blog, you can, of course, use a free service like this one. How do you build a website? For all you tech geeks out there this blog will be boring, but for the novice this information is invaluable.

As mentioned in the last post, there are building languages called HTML, and XML. There are beginning and end tags and in between you put the information you want displayed. The tags do not display on the webpage, but the content in between does. There are various tags that control background color, link colors, text font, size and color, and allow you to add images, links and documents to your site. It is important for an affiliate marketer to learn this because this is how you will get your affiliate links for text ads, baners and buttons on your blog or website. Even on this simple ready to use blog, there is an option to edit HTML allowing me to insert the links for you to access these free services.

Contrary to popular opinion, you don't need expensive web development software to build great websites. All you need is a little knowledge of HTML and a simple text editor. As mentioned earlier, you could just use Notepad. The advantage to using HTML editors is that they often have commonly used items saved in files. There are many free editors out there, such as Trellian Webpage This is and always will be a free website building software. Trellian also offers other software and services that you may find helpful once you are up and running. For now, get your first site built!

Another great free resource is Wordpress, where you can find many great tutorials and plug-ins to make common website building tasks much easier. Most webhosting services support Wordpress sites and it is easy to upload. All Wordpress applications and tutorials are free to the public. Great new plug-ins and applications are released all the time, and simplify many necessary tasks like adding key words and search engine optimization.

When I first started out I found the overwhelming amount of information on Wordpress somewhat intimidating so I tried another route. I discovered a very low cost software and a great book on how to create a website with HTML. It's called My Website is Better Than Yours This book gave me the confidence to do everything from scratch, and the basic understanding to implement more technical plug-ins. The Coffee Cup software company encourages you to try before you buy, so I highly recommend the free trial of CoffeeCup HTML Editor This great editor includes a way to preview your webpage in your default browser so you can see what others will see before you publish.

Get Online Fast

There are hundreds of promotional sites offering all kinds of advice to affiliate marketers, most of them bragging about how much money you will make using their system for marketing. They do offer tons of great advice, but for the computer illiterate and the internet novice, they usually add confusion rather than helping. You need to be online to make any money.

The obvious problem is these advisors assume you already have websites, email, and blogs up and running. Without any knowledge of how a website is built or how the internet works, a true newbie is at a loss on where to begin. There are many scams out there with tempting offers of prebuilt websites, ad campaigns, and offers to optimize your prebuilt website for search engines and traffic. This can cost a would-be marketer thousands, while those doing the work hijack all the profits.

The first thing you need to know is that you don't have to start with a website. You can make money online by starting with a blog just like this one. It is free, does not require much knowledge on website building, and can be easily turned into a source of income. Blogging is also a great way to drive more traffic to your website once you get one up and running.

For the very computer illiterate, one tip to make even this blog service easier to learn, is to mouse over the icons to get information on what they do. Save your posts as drafts and experiment. You can always delete everything and start over. Another great time saving idea is to write your posts and save them in a text program first (Word, Works, etc.) so you can just copy and paste them back in should you need to delete something.

Get started online today. Customize your blog however you like, and create a post. Once you get started there are many resources online to give you even more great tips. One of my favorites is Affiliate Classroom
